Fayette County Public Library Makes A Splash for Summer Reading

May 30, 2022

The Fayette County Public Library welcomes everyone of all ages to explore “Oceans of Possibilities” during summer reading 2022! The library is being decorated with ocean and marine life as part of this year’s theme. With something for everyone, there is a long list of programs available at the library in June and July.

For starters, the library is hosting its Summer Reading Kick-Off Event on Thursday, June 2 at 10 a.m.  On the lawn at the library there will be guests such as author/illustrators, a professional hula hoop performer, singing pirates, a visit with Ariel and Moana, crafts and of course sign-up for Summer Reading. Around 11:30 a.m. the event will migrate down to the Dottie event center for a deejay dance party and individual hula hooping! Grab lunch at a nearby food truck, Hog Pit BBQ or bring a sack lunch. Swimsuits may be worn to enjoy the splash pad in City Center Park. The party wraps up around 1:00 p.m.

For little ones ages 0-4, “Shake, Rattle & Roll” is back with Ms. Charlotte and Ms. Jess. This storytime features songs, stories, movement and fun. “Shake, Rattle & Roll” is held in the Children’s Library on Tuesday June 7 & 14 and July 12 & 19 at 10 a.m. Our youngest patrons are also invited to a special puppet show geared for ages 2 and 3 on Tuesday, June 28 at 10 a.m. when Piccadilly Puppets presents, “A Shore Thing.”

On Tuesday June 21 at 10 a.m. join Children’s Librarian, Ms. Larisa for “Popsicles In The Park,” for a story, craft and of course, a popsicle!

For programs designed for ages 4 and up, come Thursdays at 10 a.m. in June and July for FCPL’s Summer Storytelling series featuring a celebration of books such as “The Otter Who Loved to Hold Hands,” Eric Carle’s books “Mister Seahorse” and “A House for Hermit Crab,” “One Fish, Two Fish…,” “The Little Mermaid” and others. Young readers will love the theatrical adaptations of these beloved titles and the accompanying crafts. All ages welcome, but younger children may need assistance. On Thursday, July 7 a dynamic and colorful magic show is performed and on July 14, FCPL welcomes back the talented Lee Bryan, “That Puppet Guy” with his show “Circus Fanta-Sea.” And finally, on Thursday July 28 the “Back to School Bash – Rock n’ Read” is at the Dottie with playtime afterward at the splash pad in City Center Park.

Wednesdays in June and July from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. are open play times in the children’s library with Legos, the train playset, Magna-Tiles, KEVA planks and more. Hang out, play, listen to music, meet new friends and of course, read.

Take in an animated favorite on “Monday Matinees” at 10 a.m. Mondays June 6, 13, 27, July 11 and 18. Movies are shown in the large meeting room on the big screen. Take a break from the heat, relax and munch free popcorn.

The Reading Paws program “Reading with Luna” is still ongoing on Wednesdays at 4 p.m. Call or stop by the children’s desk to reserve a child’s time slot to read outloud to Luna.
