Legacy Theatre opens the touching musical romance, Daddy Long Legs!

September 11, 2024

The touching musical romance, Daddy Long Legs opens at Legacy Theatre! This beautiful Off-Broadway hit opens September 13th and runs through September 29th.

Winner of a 2016 Drama Desk award, Daddy Long Legs is a critically-acclaimed musical with beloved productions across the globe including New York, Canada, London and Tokyo. Daddy Long Legs features music and lyrics by Tony Award-nominated composer/lyricist, Paul Gordon (Jane Eyre), and Tony-winning librettist/director, John Caird (Les Misérables). Based on the 1912 novel of the same name by Jean Webster, the musical tells the story of orphan Jerusha Abbott and her mysterious benefactor who agrees to send her to college, who she dubs "Daddy Long Legs”. Under the conditions of her benefactor, Jerusha sends him a letter once a month, describing her new-found experiences with life outside the orphanage.

Daddy Long Legs is a beloved story in the spirit of Jane Austen, The Brontë Sisters and “Downton Abbey.” Set in turn-of-the-century New England, this charming rags to riches tale is filled with beautiful new music and delightful characters. The story was also adapted into a 1955 film starring Fred Astaire.

The production is directed by Legacy’s Artistic Director, Mark Smith. “I am so excited to revisit this beautiful show” says Smith. “Our audiences loved this show in 2018, and have been wanting us to produce it again. Kaitlyn Sage won the Suzi Bass Award for her performance of Jerusha, and we are so excited that she is back at Legacy to reprise this role.” In addition to Kaitlyn Sage playing Jerusha Abbott, the role of Jervis Pendleton will be played by Atlanta’s Grayson Yockey. Yockey recently appeared at Legacy as Augustine in Pelagius, and Bob Wallace in Irving Berlin’s White Christmas.

“This show is just a love story of the purest kind,” says Executive Producer Bethany Smith. “It’s sweet and funny, it’s full of mystery, and the music is absolutely gorgeous. I don’t think there is anything not to love!” Daddy Long Legs is music directed by Paul Tate and features a scenic design by Benjamin Warren and Katie Denyes, lighting design by Bryan Rosengrant, Sound Design by RJ Stidham, and projection design by Bradley Bergeron.

The Legacy’s season continues with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Jersey Boys (rated PG), and The Play That Goes Wrong. Season subscriptions and individual tickets are on sale now.
