Based on Hans Christian Anderson’s story and made into a Disney film in 1989, with music by Alan Menken. The film was a huge success, a the beginning of a ‘Disney Renaissance.” The movie won two Academy awards, for Best Original Score and Best New Song. The Little Mermaid opened on Broadway in 2007 and was nominated for several awards including Tony Awards, The Drama Desk Award, and a Grammy Award. Legacy’s production is directed by Mark Smith, choreographed by Bethany Hayes Smith and music directed by Jodi Cotton-Street. “The Little Mermaid is a show we’ve wanted to produce here for years” says Mark Smith. “It is a huge production, filled with wonder and imagination. It’s also great that it coincides with the release of the new live action Disney film. It’s a wonderful way to spend a summer evening with the whole family.”
“I think everyone loves the music of The Little Mermaid,” says Executive Producer and choreographer Bethany Smith, “the musical has all the magical songs from the original film and then some, and the costumes are absolutely incredible. I feel that audiences are transported under the sea right alongside Ariel and that’s a magic you don’t experience from a movie.” As an added bonus, Ariel will be available for photo opportunities following the show, and children who dress up like their favorite princess receive a free necklace.
