Legacy’s indoor stage reopens with Disney’s Newsies!

July 9, 2021

The Disney film turned Broadway sensation, Newsies opens on Legacy’s stage! Newsies runs July 6th through August 1st at The Legacy Theatre in Tyrone, GA.

Set in turn-of-the century New York City, Newsies is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a band of teenaged “newsies.” When titans of publishing raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack rallies newsies from across the city to strike against the unfair conditions and fight for what’s right! Based on the 1992 motion picture and inspired by a true story, Newsies features a Tony Award-winning score by Alan Menken (Little Shop of Horrors, Sister Act) and Jack Feldman and a book by Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein (Kinky Boots). Featuring the now classic songs “Carrying the Banner,” “Seize the Day,” and “Santa Fe,” Newsies is packed with non-stop thrills and a timeless message, perfect for the whole family and every audience.

The show is directed by Mark Smith, choreographed by Bethany Hayes Smith and music directed by Joanna Li. “Our indoor stage has been dark since March of 2020,” says Smith. “We’ve been really lucky to have been able to produce some shows outside on our lawn during the pandemic, but this is really a return to our full-scale productions.”

“There is so much energy and heart in this show,” says Executive Producer and choreographer Bethany Smith. “The dancing is incredible and the music going to blow everyone away, but I really think that the honesty and heart this amazing cast brings to their roles is what will steal the show. ”

The cast is led by Chattan Johnson from South Carolina playing Jack Kelley, Caleb Peters as Davey, and  Jacob McKee as Crutchie. The cast also includes many performers returning to the Legacy including Daniel Burns (Million Dollar Quartet), Fracena Dolan (Mamma Mia), Patrick Coleman (You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown), Jessica Chunta (You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown), Tyree Thornton (Matilda), Brody Harlan (Smoke on the Mountain), Dennis Hartman (Matilda), Cristina Mariano (Mamma Mia), Evan McLean (Matilda), and Jeremy Skidmore (1776). Making their Legacy Theatre debut are Blaike Lewis of Florida and Jonathon Woodruff of Minnesota. The cast also includes some long-time Legacy Theatre students who will be making their professional Legacy debut - Liam Bell, Katharine Fox, Leanna Phillips, and Marli Pickford.

The Legacy’s 2021-2022 season continues after Newsies with Kelli sings Dolly, featuring the songs of Dolly Parton, The Sound of Music, Sister Act, and Bright Star. 5-show subscriptions are available starting at $150 and individual tickets are also on sale now for these productions.
