With the Holidays coming soon, parents will spend time preparing meals to entertain family and friends. Preschool children enjoy the extra time at home and helping out in the kitchen. While allowing your preschool child to help prepare snacks and holiday meals can be fun, there are many safety precautions for parents to take when children are in the kitchen, especially infants and toddlers:
- Avoid using refrigerator magnets. While they can be pretty for decoration, the small magnets are a choking hazard.
- Use back burners whenever possible. Many accidents occur while reaching for a pot.
- Turn pot handles toward the back of the stove.
- Keep flammable items away from the stove (towels, napkins, etc.)
- Do not allow children to handle sharp items. Always do the cutting for your children.
- Avoid allowing toddlers to have access to the kitchen when you are distracted with cooking and cleaning.
- Keep the floor skid-proof and wipe up any spills quickly.
- Dispose of plastic bags safely.
- Supervise your children carefully and assist with all tasks that involve handling hot or sharp items.
