How Sports and Physical Activities Can Benefit Your Preschooler

It is usually not difficult to get a preschooler to play a sport or enjoy a physical activity. For a preschooler, it’s about fun and laughter, but sports and physical activity have many more benefits. When you enroll your child in a physical activity, you are creating opportunities for your preschooler to explore her talents, interests, and skills. The activity also invites opportunities to practice teamwork, follow instructions, and meet new friends. Sports can even help build social skills and confidence, while providing an outlet for energy.

Here are a few additional benefits that sports and physical activities can give your child:
  1. Positive Interaction with Peers - Participation in sports creates excellent opportunities for children to interact with each other. Socializing with peers is a crucial skill for preschoolers to learn. Sports teach teamwork and social interaction in a fun and positive environment.
  2. Positive Interaction with Adults - Sports and physical activities provide an opportunity for preschoolers to interact with coaches, instructors, officials, and other adults.
  3. Learn Important Life Skills - Sports can create opportunities to communicate, cooperate, work hard, adjust to changes, problem-solve, and evaluate situations.
  4. Learn Good Sportsmanship  - When children shake hands after a game, whether they win or lose, they are learning a valuable skill. It teaches self-restraint and emotional maturity. Children learn to celebrate their victories and congratulate opposing teams for their victories, even when it’s difficult. They learn to encourage each other, and continue striving when they make a mistake. These skills help in school, and throughout life.
  5. Build Self-Esteem and Confidence - Receiving praise and support from coaches and parents help preschoolers develop self-worth and teaches the child how to accept healthy instruction and criticism.

At Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academies, we recognize that learning continues beyond the classroom. Our programs include age-appropriate physical activities for preschoolers to enjoy. Activities and games such as tag and martial arts are beneficial for children in all of the above ways.  Be sure to encourage your child to participate in sports or other physical activities. The benefits are worth the effort!
