GALAPAGOS: Nature's Wonderland

October 17 at Fernbank Museum's IMAX® Theatre

October 15, 2014

Fernbank Museum of Natural History (FernbankMuseum.org) will open the new giant screen film Galapagos: Nature’s Wonderland in Fernbank’s five-story IMAX® Theatre on October 17, 2014. Narrated by Jeff Corwin, this magnificent film takes viewers on a journey to a paradise like no other: the Galapagos Islands.

These remote, volcanic islands have existed for millions of years in relative isolation, resulting in a wonderland of nature. Half-ton tortoises, marine iguanas and tiny penguins that swim thousands of miles away from their natural habitats are just a few of the magical creatures that grace the screen.

“There are not too many places more powerful than the Galapagos Islands when it comes to understanding our planet,” said Jeff Corwin, the film’s narrator. “Galapagos: Nature’s Wonderland perfectly captures what makes this archipelago so extraordinary and what makes the creatures living there such unique characters.”

In addition to fascinating creatures, viewers will learn about the geological history that explains why this island chain is so exceptional. Around the archipelago, converging cross-winds and deep, cold, nutrient-rich currents have made possible a unique and bio-diverse marine oasis, which boasts everything from abundant microscopic plankton to Galapagos sharks.

“The Galapagos Islands are one of the wonders of the world - a living science laboratory,” said David Attenborough and Anthony Geffen, a writer and producer on the film. “The Galapagos Islands are populated with charismatic and highly unusual animals—some unique to the islands—like tropical penguins, Galapagos sharks, sea lions, diving black Marine iguanas, and the newly-discovered Pink iguanas. By studying how these animals and other life-forms adapted to this unique environment, we can better understand and protect not just the Galapagos Archipelago, but our entire fragile planet.”

This film will provide audiences with the chance to learn about a mysterious, magnificent land that boasts unique creatures and feats of nature that will excite viewers about the world around them.

Galapagos: Nature’s Wonderland will show daily at Fernbank’s IMAX® Theatre starting October 17, 2014, with evening show times available Fridays during Martinis & IMAX®.
