Mac Kid Review: Sweet Debbie’s Organic Treats

Allergy-Free & Vegan Recipes

October 9, 2013
Are you telling your kids “no” every time they ask for a cupcake at a birthday party?  With my kids food sensitivities, I constantly was.  That’s why I jumped on the opportunity to review Sweet Debbie’s Organic Treats, a cookbook comprised of recipes without gluten, eggs, dairy, soy, sugar or nuts!

Altogether the members of my household have food sensitivities to gluten, dairy, and eggs.  This may not sound like much, but try going to the store and finding cookies, bread, and cereal without any of those ingredients.  Personally, we turned to using lots of nuts and seeds.  However, this year my son has a classmate who has severe nut allergies, and we’ve decided not to take to school any food containing peanuts or tree nuts to avoid obvious issues.  So, this book couldn’t have come at a better time!
We were so happy to hear that author, Debbie Adler, has lots of recipes, including cupcakes, which every member of our family can have!  In fact, the sweets out of her Los Angeles bakery and companion cookbook actually are healthy.

Debbie Adler’s road to allergy-free cooking began when her own son became allergic to “every food in the USDA pyramid.” Debbie decided to take matters into her own kitchen.  Today, her wildly popular, allergen-free bakery, Sweet Debbie’s Organic Cupcakes, has Hollywood’s A-list celebrities (including Gwyneth Paltrow) lining up for her delicious, nutritious muffins, brownies, cookies, cupcakes, donut holes and breads.  It is the go-to bakeshop for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to dairy, eggs, soy, wheat, gluten, nuts and sugar, or folks just plain hungry for a wholesome treat. Sweet Debbie’s also ships its treats nationwide.

The book is a treasure trove of valuable tips, tricks and intimate details, and Debbie shares all her delectable secrets for 50 scrumptious treats like:
  • Irresistible Red Velvet Cupcakes
  • Salted Caramel Apple Muffins
  • Cosmic Chocolate Chip Cookies
  • Gourmet Dark Chocolate Mesquite Brownies
  • Blueberry Streusel Donut Holes
Our first recipe was the Pumpkin Pie Muffins and the Chocoholic Cupcakes .  These muffins and cupcakes turned out light and fluffy and were wonderful with flavor….unlike our past “experiments” with egg free muffins and cupcakes.  I think later today I’m going to try the Girl Scout Brownies, a coconut, chocolate, caramel, brownie – yum, yum!

Although some of the ingredients may be difficult to find at your local grocery store, you are sure to find them at Whole Foods, or online at Amazon for decent prices.  Also, some Kroger stores have begun stocking more allergy free ingredients.

Sweet Debbie’s Organic Treats will be available November 2013.  You can pre-order the book at Amazon.  You can connect with Debbie Adler at her website www.sweetdebbiesorganiccupcakes.com.
