If you're looking for a kid-friendly holiday show that won't leave parents snoozing in the back row, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, written by Barbara Robinson and performed by Southside Theater Guild is it!
My two children, ages 8 and 10 had a wonderful time! They couldn’t stay quiet while waiting for the show to start and once it started, they couldn’t stop laughing! And, forget the ride home! They couldn't stop talking about it!
In this hilarious Christmas tale, directed by Marian Johnson, a couple struggling to put on a church Christmas pageant is faced with casting the Herdman kids -- probably the most inventively awful kids in history. The mayhem -- and the fun -- when the Herdmans collide head-on with the Christmas story is unbelievable!
While all the performers did a fantastic job, my children especially loved the performance of Annie Copeland, who played Gladys. Gladys was cast as the Angel of the Lord. Instead of mumbling her simple one-liner, “Unto you a child is born,” she shazams her way onto the stage, first exclaiming her required line but then jumping up and down, adding, “He's in the barn, go see him!” Meanwhile, the two oldest Herdmans get cast as Mary and Joseph after they bully the previous year's Mary and Joseph into bowing out of the audition. And some of the Herdman brothers who are wisemen end up bringing such gifts as ham onto the stage as their offerings.
To see more of the hilarious shenanigans the Herdmans get into, bring the whole family to celebrate the real meaning of the season with this heart-warming classic at the Southside Theater Guild.
