Movement, Moderation and Mood

By Patrick Boyd, Chief Instructor, Peachtree City Choi Kwang Do September 22, 2016
Described as the 3 “M”s, these elements are key for a healthy life and life-style (and deep down we know it’s just common sense).

Movement: The old saying, “if you don’t move it, you loose it” and more true that you know. Too often, inactivity leads to health problems and sites of prior injuries means moving is painful. Both are boulders rolling down a hill; the more we let them tumble, the harder it is to change their direction. Choosing an exercise plan that increases health, while avoiding initial injuries is key. With the correct movement, we can reverse our downward spiral and, with positive goal setting, improve our health.

Moderation: If we take the position of “I’m never going to eat (fill in the blank) food again”, human nature will create a craving for it. While there are thousands of “diets” out there, the most successful approach has always been one of moderation. Selecting healthier foods, choosing smaller portions and actually “chewing” your food (ever finished eating and been accused of “inhaling your food”?) all contribute to the element of moderation. “Dining” with friends and family (and actually having a good conversation with the meal), rather than “woofing down” your food is always conducive to better digestion. If eating out is the only option, ask for a to-go box when the meal arrives at the table and place half the meal aside for home. In this strategy, we get a smaller portion and a second meal out of the deal!

Mood: We’ve all been assaulted by photo-shopped images of models and celebrities. Low self esteem and negative body image can send us down many destructive paths: eating disorders, depression, and extreme exercise programs. Each set off a cascade of negative effects for the body, mind and soul. Maintaining a realistic body image and setting positive improvement goals, go a long way to improving health.
