How the Whole Family Can Support Fayette Humane Society

September 22, 2016
The Fayette Humane Society (FHS) helps homeless dogs and cats find new families to love them. The people who work at FHS are all volunteers, and the money they spend on helping the animals comes from donations.

The FHS does not have a building, so the rescued animals live in foster homes until a family can adopt them. The FHS always needs more foster homes. Everyone in the family can help take care of the foster animal: walk the dog, change the kitty litter, teach the kitten to play gently. Foster families bring cats and dogs to the Peachtree City PetSmart store every Saturday and Sunday so they can try to get adopted.

Also, the FHS helps people get their pets fixed so they won't have babies. It is important to spay or neuter your pet, because there are already too many puppies and kittens who don't have homes. Tell your friends to spay or neuter their pets, too.

Volunteers must be at least 14 years old to work adoptions at PetSmart, but younger children can help in other ways. Some kids celebrate their birthdays by asking friends to bring donations to help the FHS in lieu of gifts, and some donate their revenues from lemonade stands, lawn mowing services, and car washes.

Donations don’t have to be money. The FHS wish list includes the following:
  • cat and kitten food
  • dog and puppy food
  • cat litter
  • dog crates (all sizes, new or used)
  • dog and cat carriers (new or used)
  • cat scratching posts
  • towels (new or used)
  • dog and cat beds
  • puppy pads
  • paper towels
  • Clorox wipes
  • cat and dog toys

Whether collecting donations or helping care for a foster pet, children can make a difference in the lives of animals, and the FHS provides a great outlet.
