Celebrate Your Child’s Achievement in Preschool and Kindergarten

Walking through the grocery store and seeing all the graduation-themed cards, balloons and flowers can get you thinking about your own child’s high school graduation. Even if your child is still in preschool or kindergarten, it can be easy getting wrapped up in the fantasy of one day being free from bed wetting incidents, crayon marks on the walls, and long grocery lists of juice boxes and cheese crackers. However, if you’re like most parents, you also dread the moments that remind you that your child is growing up quickly before your eyes. Graduation from preschool or kindergarten is one of those moments.

As your child walks across the stage in her cute oversized cap and gown, you can’t help but wish for time to stand still. You wish your little one would stay little forever. Yet, this graduation experience doesn’t have to be sad and emotional. Prepare yourself, and your child, for a time of celebration!

One way to celebrate your little one’s educational accomplishment is by creating a memory board. Use a large piece of cardstock paper or even a chalkboard to write down some of your child’s favorite memories from the previous year. Record the names of her best friends, memorable events and milestones. Document her favorite subjects at school, her favorite books and things she’s learned. If you’re concerned a large memory board will take up too much space in your home, or will eventually get lost among the rest of your child’s art projects, take a photo of the memory board and store it on a secure hard drive. When you create a new memory board the next year, pull up the previous year’s memory board and compare! Your child will be surprised at how much she has learned and grown in just one year!

Another way to celebrate your child’s preschool or kindergarten graduation is by throwing a class party! Pick up some cupcakes, prepare some goodie bags, and put on some fun music to dance, hop, skip and jump to in celebration! Ask each student in the class to name one thing they’ve learned in the past year or a favorite memory to share with the rest of the class. Take lots of pictures and smile real big! These are memories your child will never want to forget!
